The "Gesellschaft zur Förderung judaistischer Studien in Frankfurt am Main e.V". (Society for the Promotion of Judaic Studies in Frankfurt am Main) was founded in 1973 by Prof. Arnold Goldberg (1928-1991), then director of the Institute of Judaic Studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. The society aims at promoting research of Judaism and disseminating the knowledge gained with the intention of fostering mutual understanding among diverse religious communities and peoples. The society endeavours to achieve this by way of supporting the academic study of Judaism, especially in the city of Frankfurt am Main and at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, and through making these studies more widely available.
In order to achieve this aim, a journal, Frankfurt Jewish Studies Bulletin (Frankfurter Judaistische Beiträge), as well as a monographical series, Frankfurter Judaistische Studien (11 volumes to date), were started. Within the framework of the series, monographic studies on rabbinic literature from late antiquity and the early middle ages are published that are mainly based upon research undertaken at the Institute of Judaic Studies in Frankfurt. The annual, on the other hand, reflects a wide range of Judaic Studies currently done in Frankfurt, Germany as a whole, and throughout the world, encompassing a broad thematic spectrum of textual research, translations, thematic and historical studies, etc., from antiquity up to the modern era.
After Professor Goldberg’s death and an interim board, Professor Margarete Schlüter chaired the Society from 1994 until her passing away in November 2008. The current board was elected in 2013, with the following members:
